For this holiday weekend, we decided to take the family for a hike up Devil's Head at Pike National Forest. The trail is about an hour from our house and is supposed to be an easy, beautiful, family-friendly hike.
While it was over 90 degrees in Castle Rock, it was a cool 72 at Devil's Head, making the hike wonderfully pleasant and comfortable.
Abby loves hiking and has been asking for a Camelbak hydration pack of her own to go hiking with. As an early birthday present, we got her one and she looks adorable in it!
The 1.4 mile hike ascends almost 800 feet, so it takes about an hour and a half to climb. Kayleigh was in the Ergo carrier, on my back for the ride up and on Paul's back for the ride down. (Paul is much more sure-footed than I am.)
The views at the top were unbelievable! Wow-worthy.
We all made it to the top, including the 143 steps up to the Fire Lookout Station - the last manned lookout station in Colorado - and met Bill Ellis, who has manned the station for the past 20+ summers.
Making it to the top and meeting Bill meant we all received souvenir certificates stating we are now members of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Squirrels!
Abby made the entire climb and descent by herself with only the stop at the bottom of the lookout station for a snack.
We saw something quite motivational during this hike - a young woman with two artificial legs making it to the Lookout Station!

Abby got a Camelbak - just like Daddy's, except pink - as one of her birthday presents this year. She couldn't wait to use it on this hike.
Nice views all the way up the trail.
Mr. Bill Ellis mans this station and demonstrates the instrument used to pinpoint fires.

The stairs leading up to the Lookout Station worried Abby a bit, but once she was up, she was running around the deck and shouting, "Mom! Look at that VIEW!"
